Text: James 1:1-12
1. THE REALITY OF TESTING AND TRIALS
We will face them in many ____________& at various times.
James 1:2— “Consider it pure joy, my brothers whenever you face trials of many kinds…”
Job 14:1, Psalm 34:19, John 16:33, & Acts 14:21-23.  God’s servants have always faced trials and so did the Holy Son of God—why do we think we should miss out?
2. THE REASON FOR TESTING AND TRIALS
a.  They come to try our _____________.
What is our faith really in? How strong is it? God is seeking to take us from mini-faith people to mighty-faith filled people who move mountains and make a huge impact for Him.
James 1:3-4- “Because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”  Hebrews 11:32-38 & Romans 5:3-5 & 8:28-30
b.  They come to toughen our character and make us more___________________.
Am I more Christ–like? Am I more godly? Am I less self-centered and more servant-hearted than a year ago? 
3. THE RIGHT WAY TO RESPOND TO TESTING & TRIALS
a.  We must not fear them like foes, but welcome them as____________________.
James 1:2— “Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you on all sides.” (The Message) They come to help and heal, not to hurt & hinder our walk.
b.  Don’t be fickle, be faithful and ______________well—it will be worth it all one day when we see Jesus!!
James 1:12- “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.”
Someone said “God can take great tests and turn them into great testimonies. He can take turn tragedies into triumphs.”

PRAYER—DON’T BREATH WITHOUT IT! ACTS 12:1-19 
(Sunday Sep 23rd)
1.   PRAYER SHOULD BE OUR HIGHEST ____________________.
Acts 1:14- “They all joined together constantly in prayer…”  I Thessalonians 5:16- “Pray without ceasing.” (KJV) See also Acts 2:42, 3:1, 6:1-4
Prayer is as vital to our souls as food and air are to our bodies!  God wants His church to be a house of prayer—Isaiah 56:7,  Matthew 21:12-13, & I Timothy 2:1-8.
Prayer together gives us support and strength. It helps us face great difficulties together and it helps hold us accountable.  Do I have a prayer partner? What would happen if couples partnered more in prayer? Family and friends? Pastors etc…Prayer together brings unity and intimacy more than anything else!
3.   PRAYER SHOULD BE ____________________& PERSISTENT!
Acts 12:5- “The church was earnestly praying to God for him.”  Hebrews 11:6- “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
The Greek words used in these verses suggest—being intent, fervent, craving, seeking and searching.
Do I pray with passion? In prayer it is better to have a heart and no words than to have words with no heart!  We don’t have to pray—we get to talk with the King who is our ABBA FATHER!!! See Matthew 7:7-11 & Hebrews 4:16 
4.   PRAYER UNLEASHES MORE _______________THAN WE CAN IMAGINE.
Ephesians 3:20- “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine.”
Prayer leads to powerful preaching, it touches and transforms people, it promotes peace, sets people free from their prison, and helps us face pressure and persecution!  Oswald Chambers said “Prayer imparts the power to walk and not faint.”
 
ANSWERS:  PRIORITY, PARTNER, PASSIONATE, & POWER
 
IS THE LORD’S HAND ON YOU? (Sunday Sep 16th)
KEY VERSE: Acts 11:21— “The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.”
1. THE HAND OF THE LORD _______________________US.
Psalm 73:23-24— “Yet I am always with You; You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward You will take me into glory.”
Are you holding His hand or have you let go and run on ahead of Him? See Psalm 32:8-9, Acts 8 & 16
We need more than a Global Positioning System, we need God’s Presence Showing the way! Where would we be without His faithful guidance in life-see Psalm 23:6.  Do I truly let Him lead or do I try to manipulate my way?
 2. THE HAND OF THE LORD _______________________For US.
Psalm 145:16— “You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.”
Isaiah 41:10— “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” See Acts 4:30 & 17:1-6.  What do you attribute your success to? See Ezra 7-8.  When was the last time God worked through you in such a way that you knew beyond any doubt that His hand was upon you? See Ephesians 2:10.  Where do you go for handouts? James 4:2 & 5:16
3. THE HAND OF THE LORD ___________________US FROM HARM.
I Chronicles 4:9-10— “Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that You would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let Your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free of pain.”
Psalm 31:15, John 10:28, Acts 18:9-11, 23:11 & 27
How much do we owe to the loving protection of our Heavenly Father? How much danger has He protected us from?  Is there any safer place to be than in the hollow of His holy hand?  When you can’t trace His hand you can always trust His heart.

 COMPELLED BY THE CROSS (Saturday Sep 8th) 
TEXT: ISAIAH CHAPTER 53
1. THE __________________ON THE CROSS-VERSES 1-5
 Who is this suffering servant? Jewish scholars puzzled over these passages for centuries. Many considered Isaiah 49-55 to be the most significant part of the Old Testament, and yet they could not agree on what exactly the prophet meant. Look up Luke 24:25-27, 44-47 and Acts 8:26-35. Jesus Christ alone fulfills this prophecy! His birth, his humble life, and sacrificial death and resurrection were all predicted in the Scriptures. 
2. THE _____________OF THE CROSS-3-6, 11
     A. First, Christ experienced emotional pain.
Isaiah 53:3- “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”  Christ faced ridicule and rejection from his own family, friends, and nation. In fact, when it came to choices, the nation chose Barabbas, a notorious criminal over Christ!
     B. Next, Christ endured physical pain– verses 5-8
Isaiah 52:14- “Just as there were many who were appalled at him, his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness.”  Mark 14:53-65, 15:1-20.  Flogging or scourging was a ruthless punishment that used a leather whip with multiple ends and sharp bits of bone or metal embedded in the ends. It could leave the back raw and bleeding, sometimes even exposing the bones and organs.
Floggings occasionally caused death!
     C. Third, Christ experienced spiritual pain
Isaiah 53:5- “But he was pierced (wounded, broken or slain) for our transgressions, he was crushed (beat to pieces) for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him.”  Charles Spurgeon said, “If God were to lay his finger on any one of us, we should be struck with sickness, paralysis, and even death. Then think of God smiting! So when he saw our sin laid on his Son, he smote with the blows of a cruel One, until Christ said, ‘My God, my God why have you forsaken me?’” 
3. THE _____________________OF THE CROSS-VERSES 4-12
Why did Christ go through all that emotional, physical, and spiritual pain?
     A. First, He died in our place to save us from sin’s awful penalty. See verses 5-6.
Ezekiel 18:4- “The soul who sins must surely die.”  I Peter 3:18- “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”
     B. Second, He died to save us from sin’s enslaving power.
Romans 8:1-2- “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.”  I Peter 2:24- “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”
    C. Third, He died to give us true peace and purpose in life.
Ephesians 2:13-14- “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.”  II Corinthians 5:14-15- “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore, all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” 
   CLOSING QUESTIONS:
Will I trust this suffering Savior with all my heart? Since He died such a passionate death for me, will I live a passionate and purposeful life for Him? Do I realize that by His wounds I am healed?  Will I learn to walk in the freedom Christ purchased for me? 
   QUOTE TO CONSIDER:
Dale Evans said, “All of my life, I have been looking for a pot of gold at the foot of the rainbow, and I found it at the foot of the cross.”
ANSWERS:  PERSON, PAIN, & PURPOSE
  
GOD IS NOT PARTIAL OR PREJUDICED—ACTS 10
(Sunday Sep 9th)
1. OUR VIEW OF CHRIST SHOULD ________________HOW WE VIEW OTHERS.
Acts 10:34-- “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism.”  James 2:1-- “My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism.”
Peter had to grow in this area and so do we if we are honest.  Do I treat certain people differently based on race, creed, looks & social status? How we treat others is how we are treating Christ-see Matthew 25:31-46 & Romans 15:7 
2. WHEN WE ARE PARTIAL & PREJUDICED WE ______________THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD.  Genesis 1:27, Galatians 3:28 & James 3:9-10
We slap our Creator’s face when we ignore or slander those who are dear to His heart.  “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness
(Declaration of Independence) 
3. GOD ________________ALL PEOPLE IN HIS PLAN Of SALVATION!
Acts 10:43-- “All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.” Cf. Revelation 5:6-10
The ground is level at the Cross. All people desperately need God’s grace and forgiveness. All have a special place in His great plan.  What if Philip hadn’t gone to Samaria and Peter hadn’t gone to share with Cornelius?  Who do I need to reach out to with the greatest news of all?
ANSWERS:  IMPACT, INSULT & INCLUDES
 
PAUL– A TROPHY AND TESTIMONY OF GOD’S AMAZING GRACE! (Sunday Sep 2nd)
1. PAUL‘S   ___________________ACHIEVEMENTS.
Galatians 1:14— “I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.”
See Philippians 3:1-6, Isaiah 64:5-6 & Jeremiah 45:5.  Paul was from the right race and religion. He followed all of the rules and rituals blamelessly. He had elite religious and cultural training and yet none of this could save his soul!  Paul was on his way up the ladder of success so to speak!
There are two roads - human achievement or Divine accomplishment. 
2. PAUL THE ZEALOUS ________________________.
Galatians 1:13— “How intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.”
Acts 7:54-8:1, 9:1-4, I Corinthians 15:9 & I Timothy 1:13.  Saul of Tarsus was a serious and sincere man. He intensely and violently tried to purge Israel and surrounding areas of these “heretics” in his mind.  We can be sincere and yet be seriously wrong!  Just think, when someone attacks Christians they are really attacking Christ! 
3. PAUL’S ________________________CONVERSION TO CHRIST!
I Corinthians 15:10— “By the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not without effect.”
Acts 9:5-15, 19-22, I Timothy 1:12-16 & Philippians 3:7-10.  No person’s past is beyond God’s pardon. No sin is too dark or deep that the precious blood of Christ cannot fully cleanse.  Paul learned to renounce religion for a real relationship with Christ. To be a true Christian we must put off all confidence in human merit & trust in Christ alone for salvation!  God called Paul by grace, converted him by grace and radically changed him by grace. He can do the same with us too!  Paul never got over God’s grace and nor should we.  The same root word for grace is also in the word for thanksgiving!
God’s grace turned a man who was extremely hateful into one who was eternally grateful. What has God’s amazing grace done to you?

OVERCOMING EVIL WITH GOOD (Sat Aug 25th) TEXT: GENESIS 37-50
1. WE NEED TO BELIEVE IN GOD’S _________________FOR OUR LIFE— Genesis 37:1-11, 19-20
Ephesians 3:20- “Glory be to God who by His mighty power at work within us is able to
far more than all we would ever dare to ask or dream of—infinitely beyond our highest
prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.”
Do I see life through my limited vision or God’s awesome vision? Do I encourage others in their
dreams?
2. DON’T ALLOW DIFFICULTIES TO ____________________YOU! — II Corinthians 1:3-9, 4:16
18, 6:3-10.  Proverbs 24:16— “A righteous man falls seven times and rises again.”
Joseph experienced hatred and betrayal from his brothers, false accusation and prison, yet he never
gave in to despair!  What does it take to discourage you? It is always too soon to quit! Instead of asking why, we should ask what am I to learn through this Lord?
3. BE _________________TO GOD AND REFUSE TO BE DETOURED & DEFEATED BY
TEMPTATION.
I Corinthians 10:13- “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And
God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you
are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
Genesis 39, James 1:13-15, & Hebrews 2:17-18, 4:15-16.  Satan uses temptation as a trap. God allows it as a test and opportunity for us to draw close to Him. 
4. BELIEVE THAT GOD HAS THE FINAL _________________IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF
OUR LIFE.  Genesis 50:14-21, Proverbs 16:4, 9 & Acts 2:23-24
Do we really believe God is in control of the drama of life?  Can we trust His heart when we can’t see His hand?  Joseph’s life is a picture of Christ and what He accomplished for us!

ANSWERS: DREAM, DISCOURAGE, DEVOTED, & DECISION
