LESSONS TO LEARN FROM DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILIES (Aug 18th)

 1. LEARN TO _______________BEFORE MAKING BIG DECISIONS– Genesis 24:1-27, Proverbs 3:5-6 & James 4:2
James 1:5– “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given him.”
Is prayer my last resort or first response? May we intercede for our children to make godly choices in this ungodly world!
 2. SHOWING ____________________LEADS TO ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS— Genesis 25:19-27, 26:34-35
James 2:1-“My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism.”  When we show favoritism to one person over another, it leads to bitterness, division and rivalry. Do I see others the way that God does? Remember God looks at the heart!  God has divine and yet different plans for our children. Can we accept those differences?
3. THE PRESSURES & PLEASURES OF THE __________________MUST NOT CLOUD OUR FOCUS ON THE FUTURE!  Genesis 25:29-34, I Corinthians 9:24-27, Hebrews 12:15-17
I John 2:17- “The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.”  Do we think through the consequences of our attitudes and actions? Are we proactive or reactive? Are we impulsive or intentional? Do we walk by faith or sight? Are we sacrificing what is lasting on the altar of the fleeting?
4. GOD IS OH SO ______________________WITH HIS PEOPLE AND IS TOTALLY FAITHFUL TO HIS PROMISES!  Genesis 26:1-12, 28:10-22 & II Peter 3:9-15
Philippians 1:6- “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
When we are discouraged with how things are going in our lives and with our loved ones, remember God will never give up on us! Am I harder on myself and others than God is?  Do I truly believe & receive His amazing & sustaining grace?
ANSWERS: PRAY, PARTIALITY, PRESENT & PATIENT

PEOPLE WHO OVERCOME ALL OBSTACLES! (Aug 19th)
TEXT: ACTS 4-5
 1. BELIEVERS ARE _______________________PERSECUTION.
II Timothy 3:12— “Everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
John 15:18— “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.”
See Acts 7:54-8:4, 14:1-22, Matthew 5:9-12 & John 16:33.  Life is not a breeze but a battle. If we take a stand for Christ we will be ridiculed, mocked, misunderstand and in some instances martyred for our faith!  How often do we remember & pray for persecuted believers?
2. BELIEVERS CAN BOLDLY FACE PERSECUTION WITH PRAYER AND _________________________.
James 5:16— “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
II Timothy 4:7— “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race and I have kept the faith.”
Acts 4:18-4:31, 5:27-42 & Romans 8:35-39, II Timothy 2:3.  We must learn to keep our chin up and our knees down.  On a scale of 1-10—how would you rate your perseverance?  It is always too soon to quit. Instead of asking the Lord to get us out of this mess, we should ask Him how we can grow through it.  Job, Joseph & Jesus are our greatest examples of endurance—for further study see Genesis 37-50, Job & Hebrews 12:1-3
 3. BELIEVERS MUST REMEMBER HOW ________________________ THE PRECIOUS NAME OF JESUS IS!
Proverbs 18:10— “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous run to it and are safe.”
Acts 4:12 & Philippians 2:9-11, Romans 10:11-13.  He is as close as the mention of His name. We can call on His name for salvation, strength, satisfaction & security.  One day everyone will bow and submit to the great name of Jesus Christ, the only true Savior and Lord!!!  Do I honor, hallow and herald His name daily?
ANSWERS:  PROMISED, PERSEVERANCE, & POWERFUL

GOD IS LOOKING FOR INTERCESSORS TO INTERVENE!
TEXT: Genesis 18-19 (Sat Aug 11th)
Key Verse: I Samuel 12:23- “As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you.”
 I. THE IMPORTANCE OF AN INTERCESSOR
    A. God has ______________us to be intercessors.
I Peter 2:9- “But you are a chosen people, and royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
See II Chronicles 7:14 & I Timothy 2:1-5. We are called to be a blessing to the world. We do this best on our knees!
    B. God uses intercessors to ___________the course of history.
Prayer changes circumstances- Acts 12 & 16.  Prayer strengthens and grows the church- Acts 2:42-47.
Prayer converts people and changes their character– James 5:13-20.
II. THE IMAGE OF AN INTERCESSOR
    A. Intercessors have a ___________relationship with God.
Psalm 25:14- “Friendship with the Lord is reserved for those who fear him. With them he shares the secret of his covenant.”
A true intercessor has the heart of God when they pray. They pray according to God’s will not their own– I John 5:14-15
    B. Intercessors have real compassion for others and __________ their burdens to God. See Galatians 6:1-2, Matthew 9:35-38.
Romans 10:1- “Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.” DO I REALLY CARE FOR OTHERS? AM I BURDENED FOR THEIR SOULS?
    C. Intercessors cry out to God ___________________!
Hebrews 11:6- “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
The Greek word used in Acts 12:5 is a medical term used to describe stretching a muscle to its limits.
Do I pray in faith and with fervency? How easily do you give up praying for someone or something? See Luke 18:1-8
DO I WRESTLE IN PRAYER FOR OTHERS?
Prayer delights God’s ear, melts His heart and opens His hand. He is more willing to answer than we are to ask!
ANSWERS: CALLED, CHANGE, CLOSE, CARRY, & CONSTANTLY

SEE THE NEED AND SOW A GOOD DEED! (Aug 12th)
TEXT: ACTS 3
 1.   DO WE REALLY __________ALL THE SUFFERING PEOPLE AROUND US?
See Acts 3:1-5, Matthew 9:35-38 & I John 3:16-18.
Colossians 3:12— “Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy & dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
It is hard to look suffering in the face. Wouldn’t we rather turn away and stare in a different direction?
Consider the following startling stats: There are 145 million orphans worldwide. 1.75 billion people are desperately poor. Depression has doubled and suicide has tripled in the last 15 years among young adults age 15-24. Many people in the world have yet to hear of Jesus Christ!  Will I dare to look suffering right in the eye and ask God for His compassionate and loving heart?  In certain Zulu areas of South Africa, people greet each other with a phrase that means “I see you.” Maybe we should do that!
 2. WHEN I SEE A GREAT NEED, WILL I ______________AND SHARE WHATEVER I CAN WITH THEM?  Ephesians 2:10— “For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works.”
Peter and John didn’t look the other way, they looked at this man in great need and shared Jesus with him in a personal and practical way.  God wants us to be His heart, His eyes, hands and feet!
Who is near and most in need? Will I use my time, talent and treasure to serve the Lord and all He places in my path?  The problem is not one of resources, but one of willingness and ability! We have been saved to serve. Blessed to be a blessing!  Do I believe that faith without works is dead? James 2:14-26.  Can others see our faith by what we do?  Will I open my heart, hands and even my home to serve the least of these? See Matthew 25:14-31.
ANSWERS:  SEE & SERVE

    B. God called Abraham to a fantastic __________________.
Genesis 12:2- “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” DO WE REALIZE HOW GREAT OUR FUTURE IS?  See Ephesians 1:3, I John 3:1-2 & Revelation 21:1-4.  WE TOO ARE BLESSED IN ORDER TO BE A BLESSING!

CALLING ALL COMMITTED CHRISTIANS (Sun Aug 5th)
KEY VERSE: Acts 2:42- “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
1.    THE CALL TO COMMITMENT– Acts 2:41-47
The Greek word for devoted in our key verse means, “to passionately persist in something.” Are you committed to Christ in that way? What keeps you from being sold out to Christ & His body?
2.   THE CHARACTER OF COMMITMENT
 A. First, we are to be committed to _______________________.
The early Christians devoted themselves to learning and living out Christ’s teaching. See Matthew 28:18-20 and John 8:31-32.  Are you a lifelong learner of Christ? Are you teachable? Are you becoming transformed more into the likeness of Christ?
 B. Second, we are to be committed to _____________________.
Acts 2:44- “All the believers were together and had everything in common.”See verse 46 and compare with Hebrews 10:24-25.  As believers in Christ we are called to believe but also to belong!
The Greek word for fellowship is “Koinonia” which means “partnership based upon something shared in common.”  Do I really love to walk with and work with God’s people? Every Christian is a part of the body & bride of Christ!
 C. Third, we are to be committed to _____________________.
Acts 2:43- “Everyone was filled with awe…” See verses 46-47. Do we stand in awe of who God is and what He has done?  See John 4:23-24. Do we truly worship God in spirit and truth?

I Thessalonians 5:17 says “Pray without ceasing!”
Why does God want us passionate about prayer? Prayer is our lifeline that keeps us connected with God’s presence, power, and plan!
 E. Finally, we are to be committed to _____________________.
Acts 2:47- “And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
Are we committed to sharing our faith? Do we have a burden for the lost? What can we do to be more mission minded in a self-centered world?

ANSWERS:  DISCIPLESHIP, FELLOWSHIP, WORSHIP, PRAYER & EVANGELISM

DON’T GO WITH THE FLOW-DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!
TEXT: GENESIS 6-9 (Sat July 28th)
 I. THE DEPRAVITY AND DESTRUCTION OF MANKIND
    A. Mankind by nature is crooked, corrupt, and ___________in his character.
Genesis 6:5- “The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.”
Genesis 6:11-12, 8:21, Psalm 51:5, and Jeremiah 17:9.  Humanism teaches that mankind is basically good and is evolving into something better. The Bible teaches just the opposite! That is why Jesus said, “You must be born again!” (John 3:7)
    B. Mankind by nature brings ___________________and judgment upon himself.
Genesis 6:7-8- “The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the Lord said, ‘I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth…”
GOD IS A GRACIOUS AND GOOD GOD, BUT HE IS ALSO A JUST JUDGE WHO HATES SIN! My sin breaks God’s heart!!  Look up Romans 1:18-32, II Thessalonians 1:6-10.
II. THE DIFFERENCE GOD MAKES IN A GODLY PERSON.
    A. Noah was _________________before God because of His undeserved favor and grace.
Genesis 6:8- “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.”
See Ephesians 2:8-9 & Titus 2:11-12.  Noah’s walk matched his talk! He consistently did what was right in God’s sight! Do we? See Micah 6:8, Genesis 7:1,5-9, 8:15-16.
    B. Noah had a _______________________with God!
Genesis 6:9- “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.”  NOAH WALKED WITH GOD, WORKED WITH GOD, AND WORSHIPED GOD!
    C. God ____________the righteous from judgment!
Genesis 6:13-16, 8:1-16, I Thessalonians 1:10, 5:9-10, II Peter 3:1-14 & Revelation 3:10.  Jesus Christ is the ark of safety for the sinner! Have I come to Him for refuge from the storm? Am I telling others of His saving power?
ANSWERS: REBELLIOUS, RUIN, RIGHTEOUS, RELATIONSHIP, & RESCUES

GOD’S DYNAMIC ENABLING– Acts 2 (Sunday July 29th)
I.    WE DO NOT HAVE TO BE _________________BY FEAR.
Timothy 1:7— “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
The Spirit changed the disciples from fearful to fearless followers!  We all are like sheep...timid and
fearful by nature. We fear failure, the future, futility, and foes of all sorts.  Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “There is nothing to fear except fear itself.”
2.   WE CAN BE ____________ & DYNAMIC CHRISTIANS BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE AND POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US.
The Greek word for POWER IS “DUNAMIS” which means dynamic, explosive, mighty and miraculous power.  Acts 1:8, 2:1-12, 4:13, 31, 5:27-32, 7:54-60, 9:31, Romans 15:13.  The Holy Spirit is our helper in the Christian life—He teaches us how to pray, shows us the way and enables us to obey!  He was given to us to help us with our many weaknesses.
3.   THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GIVEN TO MAKE US LIKE______________.
Romans 5:5— “Hope does not disappoint us because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.”
John 7:37-38, Galatians 5:22-23—We can be channels of blessing.
If I am not becoming more like Jesus, it could be because I am not allowing His Spirit to change and rearrange my character.  God’s love breaks through all barriers. He has a heart of genuine unconditional and unselfish love for all people! Do we?
4.  THE CHOICE IS OURS—WHO WILL ______________ US? OUR SINFUL SELFISH NATURE OR THE HOLY SPIRIT?
Galatians 5:16, 25— “Live by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

Am I putting God in a box? Do I follow His gentle and powerful leading or do I try to manipulate and force things?  Am I ignoring the Spirit’s presence & power in my life?  Am I grieving Him by some unconfessed sin in my life?  See Ephesians 4:29-32.  Am I quenching His work in any way? See I Thessalonians 5:16-22.  The world has yet to see what God will do with a person who is fully and wholly consecrated to the Holy Spirit-  See II Chronicles 16:9.

ANSWERS:  CRIPPLED, CONFIDENT, CHRIST, & CONTROL
